KATONAH - When Michael Balkind first started writing, it came out of despair and sleepless nights.


Six years ago, after the collapse of an alarm-system business he helped build, Balkind said he was on the verge of financial ruin.


"I couldn't sleep at night," said Balkind, a Katonah resident of 20 years. "And suddenly, I had all this time."


A "voracious reader" who had always dreamed of becoming a novelist, Balkind said the one thing that kept him from writing was time....

When she heard the diagnosis of invasive lobular carcinoma, Darrie Eason had but one thought:
