STAMFORD - Greenwich-based UST Inc., the world's largest maker of smokeless tobacco products, plans to relocate its corporate headquarters and 350 employees to Stamford's High Ridge Park office complex by late summer.

UST, whose brands include Skoal, Copenhagen, Red Seal and Husky, said last month that it would leave Greenwich for smaller quarters elsewhere in Connecticut.

'We did an extensive search, and that was the one we chose,' UST spokesman Mark Rozelle said of High Ridge Park. 'We looked in other states as well as other parts of Fairfield County. It looks like a beautiful facility, and it looks like our people are excited to move into our new home.'

All employees have chosen to stay with the company after the move, Rozelle said. The new location is within 10 miles of UST's current headquarters at 100 W. Putnam Ave. in Greenwich and is 2 miles closer on average to employees' homes, he said. UST has been in Greenwich since 1970.

'They are relieved it is so close and easy to get to,' Rozelle said.

A multimillion-dollar tax incentive that Gov. M. Jodi Rell announced last month persuaded the company to stay in the state, Rozelle said.

UST had agreed to stay in Connecticut and keep a minimum of 350 employees here for at least 10 years. In return, the company will receive a $3 million low-interest loan for leasehold improvements and equipment. After three years, UST also will be eligible for $950,000 worth of tax credits, which it can draw down over seven years, the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development said last month.

Stamford Mayor Dannel Malloy started asking the company to consider Stamford soon after Rell's announcement, according to UST.......
